Last night on the radio I listened to several Herman Cain supporters sharing their views on the sexual harassment allegations. Most said that they would wait until the scandal plays out before donating money, or more money, to his campaign. About three supporters’ comments in, I got the feeling that their concern wasn’t as much with finding out the truth about the allegations, but whether or not the allegations would permanently harm Cain’s chances of winning the primary, in which case they would support other candidates. That’s when the last supporter shared her thoughts. I’m paraphrasing, but basically she said “I will wait about a week to see what happens before I give more money to his campaign. If it turns out that there is some truth to the allegations, I probably won’t give him more money, but I’ll still support his candidacy because I think he’s the best person to run the country”.

Really? This is a terrifying collection of conservative pundits’ views on the matter, and a strong case for the idea that, at least the right wing, no longer believes sexual harassment exists - regardless of whether these allegations against Cain are real. But the idea that a supposedly conservative female voter will support a presidential candidate who has a proven history of sexual harassment against women in the workplace (this being the hypothetical situation she laid out) is absolutely fucking crazy.
